Phuket Day 2

Hi guys!

From the intensive exploration and comparison of prices, we settled on a package for Day 2 morning - 1/2 hour of Adventure Thrill Vehicle (ATV) which goes to the Big Buddha, 1/2 hour of elephant trekking and 1 hour of Treetop Xtreme (high elements) with hotel transfer. On brochures, you will see a fixed price of 2,800 baht per adult (given the exchange rate at that time of SGD 1 to 25.46 baht, that's equivalent to SGD 110) but as I mentioned in the last post, you need to BARGAIN! And we got it at 1,900 baht per pax (SGD 74)!!! Yep, that's a great difference of $36!

We started off with ATV; there was a short orientation with how to maneuver the vehicle, like how to accelerate and brake and get a feel of riding it. It was super easy; all those prior motorbike/driving experience is not needed! Afterwards, we drove along the hill road up to the Big Buddha and U-turn back down. Although it wasn't as adventurous as we thought, like going into muddy areas and rocky tracks, we enjoyed a clean ride with the scenic sea view, cool morning breeze and cute elephants along the way. The weather had been kind on us for the 4 days that we were there:) Rained when we needed it and clear sunny day when it should.

By the way, it is recommended to be appropriately clothed when you visit the Big Buddha, as a form of respect, especially if you were to take a private bus or ATV up. However, if you were to hike up and get sweaty and all, it's alright to stick to your sportswear or anything comfortable as they will provide a sarong and scarf to cover up 'too-exposed' areas. We didn't know that before the visit, so you can see us wrapped in a sarong below. There is also a short video of the ATV ride.

Proceeding with elephant trekking, it was quite a scary ride, being unstable and high up off the ground. Some additional knowledge that we got from the tour guide: most elephants there are females because they are more tamable than the males, and their pregnancy is 22 months long! We saw one that was 4 months into pregnancy and it looked so big already! What will it be like when it's 22 months?

I felt kinda bad for the elephants actually. I don't know if they felt anything when we sat on them but it's sad to see the elephants not have their freedom and have to 'work', even if they are old or pregnant. I met a baby elephant too! It was cute and naughty, all, but like the mothers, it's disheartening to see it chained and beg for bananas.

It's a dilemma actually. Although it's unnatural for the elephants to live this kind of life, it is this kind of work that sustained their living. I guess it's tougher for animals nowadays to really live the way they used to, especially with civilisations everywhere and human greed. Just really how much has the human race impacted on nature and everything else? I really hope all current protected wildlife reserves will remain as long as possible. Wildlife reserves as in REAL huge natural habitats of animals cordoned off from civilisation, and not artificial construction of the like. If these real habitats are not preserved, what will the animal world be like in 50, 100, 200 years' time? All animals, except fishes and birds, only exist in cages and restricted by chains? Common animals, like elephants and tigers, become extinct? Zoos and small nature reserves are what that's left? We conquer the land of animals so that the human race can thrive. We hunt them to satisfy our material needs. Yet, after having so much more, we behave worse than animals - loss of graciousness, lack of unity, unnecessary conflicts and wars... What do we really gain?

Oops, I kinda went too far off the track. So... let's move on to Treetop Xtreme! Yep, basically it's just high elements. They do have good equipment, safety R&R and briefing, and ONE watchman to ensure general safety but... that's the maximum safety you can get. You do the buckling your own while you progress along; there's no stopping even when it rains (which we did!); as I mentioned, there's only ONE watchman on the ground. So... you are literally on your own up there, regardless of rain or shine. I must admit it's really a very interesting experience to do high elements in the rain. You will never be able to do that in Singapore and it's more challenging! Furthermore, unlike Singapore's, their high elements trail is among the trees - you are surrounded by Mother nature, which includes insects and small animals like geckos!

Generally, their service was good. There were lockers to keep your belongings; water is provided after every activity; hygiene is well-maintained with new shower caps underneath helmets; they seldom try to sell you extra stuffs so you don't have to bring too much money out; most importantly, they are very friendly and caring. This is true throughout all activities, not just Day 2's activities.

With that, our Day 2 morning ended. We went back to the hotel to wash up and rest a while before setting off to Phuket Town for lunch and more shopping. Transport down to Phuket Town was 500 baht (bargained from 600 baht). Lunch at Phuket Town Expo 'restaurant' was average; 70% of my Phad Thai  is made up of taoge (beansprout)... And that cost me 120 baht, together with a super thick, powdery and a-lot-of-ice iced chocolate. Forget that. It's shopping time!

There are two places that you can go: Expo itself and Phuket Square, which is next to Expo. Each has its own style of clothing but Expo has a lot more variety and things are cheaper. Expo has everything from socks to lingerie to (both men and women) clothes and shoes to apparels to souvenirs to food. Do bargain and compare prices from different stores. I just can't emphasize this enough. Bargain tips: have a price in mind, start bargaining with an even lower number and slowly raise it to your desired price. Most people bargain from the half way mark but gave up when the sellers don't budge or lower too little. But I would say, don't torture yourself! If you really like that piece, have a reasonable price in mind and don't think too much about how much you can reduce. Let's say, a 500 baht shirt looks like it's worth 350 baht, don't be greedy to lower it to 250 baht! If the seller stops at 360 baht or, if you're lucky, slightly below 350 baht, TAKE IT! You had a discounted price and the seller gets his/her fair share: win-win! They need to make a living too, so be reasonable.

On the other hand, Phuket Square satisfies mainly female youths and office ladies. The designs there are more trendy and of course, the prices are slightly higher. The sellers wouldn't lower the prices too much as well. But I must say, the quality is also better and you would definitely be willing to pay more for the clothes at Phuket Square. So, be reasonable and don't compare these two malls. They sell different things! FYI, Phuket Square is just a stretch of shops, so don't worry about spending too much money there. I spent more at Expo. Hehe...
Lingerie x 2 sets: 285 baht each
Dress: 240 baht
Black blazer: 260 baht
ATV photo: 200 baht
Elephant tusk necklace: 250 baht
And finally, we used 600 baht to go to Banana Walk from Phuket Town. Banana Walk is along Bangla Street, the street outside our hotel. Our motive of going there was to have dinner at Fuji Restaurant! Having Japanese food in Thailand... anyway! It was so awesome that we didn't take much photos! Hahaha. We spent about 2,000 baht in total and had a feast! There were so much dishes that I don't where to start. My favourites were the cheese sticks (known to be good and it is!) and saba fish (ERMAGAWD!). The atmosphere was very good too, very soothing and relaxed.

Yep, hope this post has provided some tips when going around Phuket. Day 3 & 4 will be up next week. Seeya~

Phuket Day 1

Hi guys!

As promised, I will be posting about my Phuket trip from two weeks ago. I hope I remember everything that I wanna share with you. Haha. So... it was a trip planned by 3 of my cousins and I. We didn't really have the itinerary drafted out because there was really limited information online about Phuket. We only managed to seal a deal on Groupon - white water rafting with zipline. So, basically we only planned out the itinerary when we reached Phuket itself.

Day 1
Our flight was on Wednesday morning by Jetstar. I'm more of a Scoot fan though; it just feels right for me. Below is a comparison table between Scoot and Jetstar but what's more important is your personal attachment to the airline. With that, I would like to emphasize that these comparisons are based on my own experiences (a few times with Scoot and the most recent one with Jetstar), so you might disagree with me.

Scoot
Jetstar
Flight schedule FROM Singapore
For certain destinations like Gold Coast and Hong Kong, the timings are early in the morning or midnight. J However, for some others, the flights can be at noon and then you will reach your destination in the evening or night, thus the whole day will be wasted. L
I’m not sure about Jetstar’s but my Phuket flight was in the morning. J
Flight schedule TO Singapore
Scoot’s timings are usually in the morning or midday. L
Personally, Jetstar’s timings are preferred because they are usually near the end of the day so you can make full use of your last day with more activities. J
Airfare
Both airfares are comparably cheap but I feel that scoot’s promotions are more frequent and significant. J

Airfares on Scoot website are constantly changing, so consumers need to be quick and decisive. STRESSFUL!!! Especially when the offers have time limits. L

Pilots’ take-off and landing

I’m not really sure how to judge this but my cousins felt that the Jetstar pilot did well for our flight, better than their previous experiences. J
Seats
The seats are more cushioned in the sense that they feel sturdier. The seats are more spacious as well. J

Others

The noises made by the engines and when there was turbulence were very deafening. It was either the door wasn't closed properly (highly impossible) or the soundproofing property of the plane is not good. L

Upon arrival, we were greeted with nice air-conditioned walkways and intimidating salespeople at the exit, pulling people to their booths with exchange rates, attractions and transportation. Oh before I forgot, if you are thinking of getting a local SIM card at the airport, there is only one booth right after you clear immigration. If not, you have to get the SIM card from 7-eleven or family mart. They have a SIM card specially for tourists, which includes unlimited data for 7 days, costing about 299 Thai baht. There's free Wifi at almost every shop though.

So we took a metered taxi to our hotel, Holiday Inn Express, in Patong. It cost us 680 baht, exclusive of 100 baht airport administration fee. There is a variety of vehicles you can choose from to get around - metered taxi (3-4 pax), car (3 pax), van (7 pax), mini bus (>7 pax)... Except for metered taxis (more expensive!!! Cabbies might take you on a 'tour' if you're not careful), you can bargain the prices for the other vehicles. FYI, they charge per vehicle, not per pax. From Patong to anywhere else, 200-600 baht is the standard price range for vans. I will be more specific when I get to travelling around later.

We were a few hours early for check-in, so after storing our luggage, we went hunting for lunch and planned our itinerary.

Holiday Inn Express has its own tour booth, so you can check out the prices for tour packages and compare them with the ones outside. If the hotel of your choice doesn't have one, just go and find one somewhere to serve as the basis of comparison. There are plenty of tour booths out on the street and BARGAINING IS NECESSARY, so DO NOT rush into paying deposits!

Right, so walking down the street outside our hotel, you will be able to see the beautiful beach!!!
And there will already be shops along the road. If you cross over to the beach side and go down towards the left, you will pass by this coffee shop. Go in and you will see many food stalls. I don't really compliment on food because as long as they suit my taste buds, I think they are good. But if I were to say something is nice, believe me, it's DELICIOUS! So anyways, we ate at MAMA restaurant, which is the center stall, and I love its food!!! I would highly recommend their Phad Thai (White Kuay Tiao), Tom Yum Goong (Tom Yum Soup) and Lap Moo (Minced Pork Salad). We also had Kang Kong (Morning Glory) and seafood fried rice. All these only cost us 810 baht, including drinks. It is near the beach and the hygiene is not bad. So I would give 4.5 stars on a scale of 5 for this eating place.

* Thai food is generally more salty, not necessarily spicy, so you will still need water! If you want to save on drinks, you can bring your own or get from family mart. If you are like me, spice-intolerant, you can ask for less spicy too!

Just beside the coffee shop, you can find a tour booth called Carolina Phuket Tour Agency. It's the first tour booth that we came across and what left the deepest impression was the staff, Mia. She's very friendly and helpful. She really went all out to provide us assistance and clinch the deal with us, in a good way. The others whom we met in the later part of the day were either not interested or unhappy when we bargain.

With all the help that we can get and running around to check out prices, we fixed the schedules for the next 3 days. I'll keep the itinerary a secret for the time being; you will have to read the next few posts to know them. :P So basically, for the rest of the day, we walked along Bangla Road, which is filled with shops selling clothes, souvenirs and tour packages. Most of them have the same stuffs and they are all quite cheap. I think the shopping malls and plazas are the ones that you should go. The things there are significantly cheaper than Singapore and there is a greater variety of things to buy. For example, Kee Plaza and especially Jungceylon Shopping Centre. In Jungceylon, there's retail stores like Mango, Melissa Dream Jelly Shoes... A must-go at Jungceylon is its supermarket, Big C! You can get almost anything (especially facial products) you want there and cheap! Along the way, we also saw a few interesting stuffs like a random life-size chess board and wall paintings etc. We bought a crazy load of things - from clothes to accessories to food - and it's just the first day!!! :S
Bangla Road

Kee Plaza
Jungceylon
Our loot from Big C supermarket
And finally, we ended out day with a ride on the Tuk Tuk, a prominent vehicle in Thailand. The ride from Jungceylong to our hotel cost 200 baht, regardless if we took Tuk Tuk or taxi. It's an experience to take the Tuk Tuk and it's very cooling and beautiful at night with the sea breeze and all the streets light, so Tuk Tuk is definitely something to go for.

Back at the hotel, we were given Level 1 rooms and it was cozy and comfortable. The only demerit is its Wifi connection. :( And that's when the 3G SIM card came to our rescue.
Toilet and its interior
Our room with balcony
We ended our day with awesome pizzas for dinner, delivered from The Pizza Company (2 pizzas - Tom Yum Goong Cheese and Sausage crusted oh my god! and Italian Sausage Cheese crusted - with 6-piece drumlets: 970 baht), and the latest Running Man episode. And... voila! My loot of the day!
Toddlers' clothes x 2 sets: 200 baht each
Phuket shirts x 4: 125 baht each
Dried mango: ~300 baht
Ikan bilis: ~100 baht
Mango bag: ~600 baht
Soap with scrubber x 2: 100 baht
Tribal patterned shorts:100 baht
Bracelet: ~100 baht
---------------------------------------------------------
Total: 2,500 baht
Day 2 will be up next week! Don't worry, day 2-4 will be more interesting and adventurous than this! ;)

A new post, a new beginning.

Hi guys!

I'm finally getting back to blogging after 3 years. You might ask me why, well, there are a lot of reasons. Firstly, I'm inspired by blogs with interesting and useful posts, and I had a hard time researching for places to go for the 2 summer trips that I went. So, I wanna help others through my experiences. Secondly, I somehow stumbled upon my old blog and I realised how useful blogging is in retaining my memories. Last but not least, I'm in this 'writing' mode, especially with all these ideas streaming in from the 2 travels I had this summer break. Travelling is not all that I'm gonna talk about; I will also post about the goodies (food, places, activities) that Singapore has to offer, my thoughts on random stuffs etc. I hope it will be entertaining and useful to you. I'm so excited! Please look forward to my weekly posts and provide me feedbacks:)

---------------------------------------------------

The above is just an introduction to my new blog. For my first post, I'm gonna do a comparison between my old and new blog. It serves as an expectation of this new blog too.

OLD
NEW
It was a childish journal of a teenager.
It will be a blog about experiences, adventures and matured thoughts.
You know, young kids have a thing for fanciful stuffs, so there were a lot of colours, Singlish, bolded, italics, underlined and striked off words.  (not forgetting chat boxes and blog skins)
Simplicity is beauty.
Another point about fanciful, abbreviations and colloquialism were very trendy at that time.
For easier reading and understand, abbreviations will be explained or even minimised.
Being a journal, the audience was just me (and maybe a few others whom I wanted to dedicate the post to).
The target audience is all netizens, so the words used will be more interactive and engaging. The message to be brought across would be more general.
Despite all these changes, I would still stick to the no-vulgarities policy. Maturity doesn’t mean vulgarities.

Yep! Thanks for reading the first post! I will be posting about my Phuket trip next, which is likely to be broken down into 2 or 3 parts. Seeya!
